Outer Wilds - the standout game so far, with a massive increase in dynamic range but I still need to fine-tune my profile for the game because some areas I encountered later on were eye-searingly bright. You have to strike a balance between dynamic range and contrast, all while trying not to burn out your retinas with HUD elements that tend to be pushed much brighter than if the game were designed for HDR.īut I've had success in nearly everything I've tried so far:

It's handled differently in every game, and there's artistry involved in making it look good. HDR remastering is not as simple as clicking a button and having it work. Well, I now have an HDR display hooked up to my PC (a 48C1 OLED), and the tools have improved quite a bit since then. I wanted to share some impressions and results of something I experimented with this weekend: remastering DX11 games in HDR using Kaldaien's SpecialK and DX9 games with the help of dgVoodoo2.ĭigital Foundry produced a video on this late last year, but I did not have an HDR display for my PC at the time, so I did not pay it much attention - and frankly, I thought that the results were horribly ugly.
